Neuropsychopharmacology of Addiction

Drug addiction is an evolving pathology with multifactorial determinants and many associated diseases which represent an enormous cost for the society. Drug addicts emerge at the intersection between vulnerable phenotypes, drug-induced neuroadaptations and favoring environments.

ADDICTEAM aims at understanding the behavioral and neurobiological processes involved in addiction in rodent models. We aim at studying: 1) specific populations (such as adolescents) or specific individuals (with executive function deficits for instance) who demonstrate higher vulnerability to addiction processes; 2) what are the behavioral substrates altered by drugs which promote recurrent drug taking, seeking and relapse; and 3) how alterations within brain circuits may sustain these behavioral modifications. Our work combines behavioral paradigms evaluating cognitive, emotional and reinforcement processes with neurobiological approaches ranging from intra-cerebral pharmacology, in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology (in behaving animals, anaesthetized animals and slices) and functional neuroanatomy.

The team is located in the Charles Perrens Psychiatric Hospital right next to the University of Bordeaux, 300 meters away from the main building of the INCIA Institute at the Carreire campus see map.

Skills developed in the team :

Behavioral paradigms aimed at evaluating rewarding, motivational and affective properties of pharmacological and natural rewards (operant rewards through self-administration, conditioned place preference and place aversion, goal-directed vs automated behaviors, attention, memory, impulsivity, decision-making, sensation or risk-seeking, anxiety, motor activities)
Brain interventions : lesions, temporary inactivation, intra-cerebral and peripheral pharmacological administrations, chemo and optogenetic
Functional neuroanatomy : immediate early gene expression for activity and plasticity markers, in situ hybridization, catFISH, immunohistochemistry, image analysis
Electrophysiology : Multi-site multi unit in vivo recordings, LFP, oscillations
Genetic models :TRPV1 KO mice, DAT-Cre mice
