Vestibulospinal reflexes are responsible for neck, limb, and body postural adjustments. These sensory-motor pathways use vestibular sensory signals coding head movements to produce the appropriate motor output in response to passive and active body imbalances. Lambert FM (OASM team) and colleagues recently published a paper focused on the maturation of vestibulospinal pathways controlling neck and forelimb postural control during the first postnatal week in mice. Using a combination of trans-synaptic rabies virus, calcium imaging, electrophysiology and EMG, this work characterized different anatomical and physiological aspects of maturation processes occurring in brainstem-spinal cord that convey vestibular inputs to cervical motoneurons. These findings constitute the first clear demonstration of functional vestibulospinal reflexes on neonatal mammals. This study outlighted the progressing acquisition of vestibular control of head and upper body posture during the 15th first days after birth supporting the idea that these two first postnatal weeks appear to be a critical developmental period in the establishment of peripheral and central vestibular function in mice.
